Bo McDougal, MA, LAT, ATC

 

Bo McDougal, “Mr. Bo”, was hired August 17, 2020 by Paxon School for Advanced Studies as their first full-time Athletic Trainer. Bo comes to Paxon after 36.5 years at Jacksonville University, serving as Head Athletic Trainer, Director of Sports Medicine and for the last 9 years as Assistant Athletics Director – Support Services.

 

Bo has been described as very patient, diligent and extremely dedicated to the field of athletic training. In 2010, Mayor Peyton appointed him as a member of the Mayor's Council on Fitness and Well-being, serving 5 terms. He was appointed by Governor Rick Scott to the Florida Board of Athletic Training in 2013 and 2015 and re-appointed to the Board in 2022 by Governor Ron DeSantis. He has been elected Vice-Chair of that board for 6 years and since as Chair, and served as the Chair of the Probable Cause Panel since 2013.

 

Since 2012, Bo has been an NFL Athletic Trainer Spotter. He was designated as Lead AT Spotter for the Jacksonville Jaguars and appointed to the AT Spotter Advisory Board in 2016. He worked the 2017 and 2018 Pro Bowl in Orlando as an AT Spotter.  In 2019, the SEC added Bo to their Medical Observer Program, working at the University of Florida.

 

McDougal was named Athletic Trainers' Association of Florida (ATAF) College/University Athletic Trainer of the Year in 2007 and was elected as ATAF’s Northeast Florida Regional Representative in the 2011 fall elections. On July 25, 2018, McDougal was recognized by the Athletic Trainer's Association of Florida for his service. Following more than 30 years of membership with the ATAF, he was inducted into the organization's Hall of Fame.

 

Bo has extensive athletic training experience, both domestic and international. McDougal has provided athletic training services for special events, including the 1984 U.S. Olympics Gymnastics Trials and the U.S. Gymnastics Federation McDonalds National Championships in 1985, the W.T.A. Sunkist Championships (1986), U.S. Fencing Association Southeast Championships (1987). He has assisted with U.S.-based touring and national teams as they trained in Jacksonville, including the U.S. Synchronized Swimming team as they prepared for the Pan American Games in 1991. He was selected to work at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado in 1996 and the NCAA men's basketball regionals in Orlando (2004), Nashville (2005), and Jacksonville (2006, 2010, 2015, and 2019).

 

He has also worked with Athletes in Action on overseas trips to Europe (Poland & Greece) in 1990 and the former Soviet Union in 1994. For five summers, McDougal served as an athletic trainer for People to People at the Ambassador Games (2007), Youth Friendship Games (2008, 2009) in Vienna, Austria, the Zico Cup Futebol Tournament (2010), and the Ole International Cup (2011) in Ribeirao Preto, Brazil. He served as a delegate leader for People to People Student Ambassador Program as they traveled to Australia in 2012 and conducted a European tour in 2014.

 

In his spare time, Bo also works event security for S.A.F.E (Management). McDougal is a Certified Doping Control Officer and a Covid-19 Contact Tracer.

 

Prior to moving to Jacksonville in 1983, McDougal served as a graduate assistant at both Arizona State and Murray State, his alma mater. He earned his bachelor's degree in health and physical education from Murray State in 1981 before completing his master's degree in health, physical education, recreation and dance in 1988. A native of Murray, Ky., McDougal was a letterman in football and baseball for Murray High School and received the Ty Holland Scholarship (1976) after being named the school's outstanding student/athlete.

 

He is a licensed athletic trainer in Florida and is a certified member of the National Athletic Trainers' Association, Southeastern Athletic Trainers' Association, and Athletic Trainers' Association of Florida.

 

McDougal and his wife Lois, who are both active members of the Church of Eleven22 - Arlington, have one child, Milya. Bo has two stepsons, Jeremy and Brian, two grandsons, Kyle & Bentley, and two granddaughters: Dawson and Ashlee.

 

Tristyn Kinser, MS, LAT, ATC

Tristyn Kinser joined the JOI staff in August 2019. She serves as the outreach Athletic Trainer at Paxon School for Advance studies as well as Assistant Athletic Trainer to the ROAR of the Jaguars. Kinser comes to JOI from High Point University in North Carolina where she worked as the Assistant Athletic Trainer for men’s & women’s cross country and track & field programs from August 2018 to May 2019.  The Jacksonville native graduated from The University of North Florida in 2016 with a Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training. She continued her educational career at Jacksonville University, earning a Master’s in Kinesiological Sciences in April 2018. During this time, she served as the Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer for the Dolphins’ football program for the 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons.

Dr. Carl Freeman, MD 

 

 Dr. Carl Freeman with Jacksonville Orthopedic Institute has been the supervising team physician for Paxon for the past several years.  

 

“Dr. Freeman specializes in the treatment of hip, shoulder and knee disorders in patients of all ages. He is one of a few Hip Preservation Surgeons in the United States. Advanced hip procedures include hip arthroscopy (hip scope), anterior total hip replacement (including robot-assisted), and surgical dislocation of the hip. Advanced shoulder procedures include shoulder arthroscopy for rotator cuff and labral repair, instability surgery, shoulder replacement, reverse shoulder replacement, and latissimus transfer. In addition, Dr. Freeman’s practice includes sports medicine and knee surgery.  He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons. 

 

Dr. Freeman graduated from medical school at Georgetown University School of Medicine and performed residency in orthopaedic surgery at UPMC Hamot. Afterward, he completed a fellowship in Surgical Preservation of the Hip at the prestigious Schulthess-Klinik (the Swiss Olympic Medical Center) in Zurich, Switzerland. In 2011, Dr. Freeman was the first recipient of the International Society for Hip Arthroscopy (ISHA) Traveling Fellowship. In 2015, Dr. Freeman was selected to be one of four surgeons to complete the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA) Traveling Fellowship, which involved training in the most advanced surgical practices in sports medicine. 

 

Dr. Freeman spent four years as an active duty orthopaedic surgeon in the US Navy, which brought him to Jacksonville - stationed at Naval Hospital Jacksonville. In 2012, he had the privilege of treating our service members in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom where he spent time in a forward surgical team and served in a tertiary combat trauma center. In addition to being an active clinician, Dr. Freeman has contributed to academic medicine as Assistant Professor of Surgery at the Herbert School of Medicine, Uniformed Services University of Health Science, Bethesda, MD, and has authored numerous scientific publications. 

 

After being stationed in Jacksonville for four years, he and his wife chose to make this city their home to raise their two children. They enjoy spending time outdoors, water sports on the St. Johns River, and traveling with their son and daughter. Dr. Freeman is the team physician for Paxon High School. 

 

Dr. Freeman is on the Duval County Medical Society Board of Directors and is a delegate to the Florida Medical Association.”
