1). Community Service/CAS Opportunity: Family Promise's Cardboard City

Family Promise of Jacksonville's mission is to end homelessness one family at a time. 35% of America's homeless are families with children. In Duval County, more than 5,800 students are homeless. Family Promise's eleventh Cardboard City is November 12-13, raising funds for our Family Support and Shelter programs. Volunteer opportunities on Friday, November 12 include set up midafternoon from 2:30 -4:30 pm, serving dinner from 6:00 - 8:00 pm, staff cookie and hot chocolate table from 6:30- 9:00 pm or breakdown from 8:30 - 9:30 pm. 3). SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY: Free Speech Essay Contest

Open to juniors and seniors in U.S. high schools, including home-schooled students, as well as U.S. citizens attending high school overseas. Additional questions regarding eligibility may be emailed to essaycontest@thefire.org. Students must submit an essay between 700 and 900 words on the provided topic. FIRE must receive all entries by 11:59 EST, December 31, 2021. Winners will be announced by February 15, 2022. One $10,000 first prize, one $5,000 second prize, three $1,000 third place prizes and four $500 prizes will be awarded. 5). UNF Application Workshop for Seniors!

Are you looking for help with your college application? The University of North Florida will be hosting an application workshop on Tuesday, November 16 from 5-7 p.m. Here’s what you can expect during this visit:

  • You will receive more information on UNF admission criteria.

  • You will be able to work on your college application one-on-one with an admission counselor.

6). OneJax Youth Diversity Leadership Institute

WHAT IS THE SANDY MILLER METROTOWN INSTITUTE?

The OneJax Sandy Miller Metrotown Institute, named for the transformative leader of Metrotown, is a gathering of high school students, entering grades 9-12, who come together to explore options for living successfully in an increasingly diverse and inter-dependent world. At the Sandy Miller Metrotown Institute students share ideas and feelings, discover their own unique talents, experience a variety of perspectives on diversity issues, multicultural communication, religious traditions, gender roles, and self-esteem. Participants create strategies for living and working with a multitude of differences.

7). Dream big! The USC Bovard Scholars application is now open


The 2022 USC Bovard Scholars application is now open! We are excited to welcome our sixth cohort of Bovard Scholars to the USC campus this summer. As I write to you, our fifth cohort is in the midst of the college application process, working with our program’s college admissions counselors to refine essays and applications. And our fourth cohort is enjoying their first year as college freshmen at top-tier universities across the country — think Harvard, Columbia, the University of Chicago, the University of California, Berkeley, and right here at USC.

We invite all high-achieving high school juniors with financial need to apply. Do you or someone you know fit these requirements?

  • Junior in high school (11th grader) at time of application

  • Currently hold a 4.0 GPA or above

  • Enrolled in Algebra II, Trigonometry or above

  • Demonstrate financial need

If so, you are eligible to apply.



8). Seal of Biliteracy 2021-22 Testing Dates are Here!

Please see the information below with dates for students fluent in a language other than English to participate in online testing to demonstrate fluency to qualify for the Seal of Biliteracy.


9). Silent Service Award - Email your school counselor to be nominated

The Peter R, Marsh Foundation recognizes that students who unselfishly provide voluntary service in their communities possess above average social/emotional intelligence, are more empathetic towards others, live more-peaceful lives, achieve greater-than-average academic success, graduate HS and typically attend college.


Students being nominated for this honor should have significant community service. Award recipients will receive:

  • A non-taxable monetary contribution conveyed by check made payable to the student.

  • An engraved memorial which includes the name of the student.

Paxon had 3 students to receive this honor during the 2020-2021 school year. 10). South Georgia State College: Admissions Application Fee Waived November 1 - 30

South Georgia State College is waiving its Admissions Application Fee November 1st – 30th.

















11). COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITY: The London Sanctuary (a nonprofit hound dog rescue and sanctuary)

TLS regularly has adoption events in the Jacksonville area that would be ideal for students needing volunteer hours! These events run from 4 hours to 6 hours and volunteers are welcome for however much time they can participate. The hounds need to be walked, played with, watered, cleaned up after, and we also ask volunteers to speak to interested people about the adoption procedure and answer questions about the hounds and TLS.

If you have any students needing volunteer hours, please feel free to share my contact information. Our upcoming events are as follows:

  • November 7th: Orange Park Farmer's Market 9:15 to 3:30

  • November 13th: Blessing of the Pets, Fletcher Park, 9:15 to 2:30

  • November 20th: Harvest of Gratitude Festival, Brewhounds, TBD

  • November 21st: Birch Island Vet event, 11:30 to 3:30

  • November 27th: Pet Supplies Plus, Atlantic Beach, 9:30 to 2:30

  • December 5th: Orange Park Farmer's Market, 9:14 to 3:30

  • December 11th: Pet Supplies Plus, Lakewood Plaza, 9:30 to 2:3
