First Year Study Abroad Opportunities at Florida State
A Unique Opportunity with Florida State
For over 60 years, Florida State University (FSU) has been a nationally recognized leader in the field of international higher education, offering a variety of study abroad and internship opportunities across the globe. One of FSU’s most celebrated study abroad programs is the First Year Abroad (FYA) program. This program gives incoming first year students the chance to study at FSU’s international study centers throughout their first year of college (fall, spring, and summer terms). During this sustained global experience, students will form deep friendships, benefit from small class sizes, and use the host country as a classroom, all while they immerse themselves in a culture unlike their own.
Studying abroad with FSU also has financial benefits. Out-of-state students who successfully complete the FYA program will earn an in-state tuition waiver for the remainder of their first undergraduate degree at FSU. Florida residents who maintain a 3.0 GPA while abroad will earn up to $3,000 in scholarships towards the FYA program. Students can also apply their financial aid toward the cost of the program.
Going Abroad as a First Year Student
FYA students can choose to study at up to two of FSU’s international study centers, which are located in London, England; Florence, Italy; Panama City, Republic of Panama; and Valencia, Spain. You can learn more about First Year Abroad and FSU’s international study centers on our website.
Interested students should apply to FSU following standard processes. We encourage students to attend a virtual First-Year Admissions Information Session hosted by the FSU Office of Admissions to learn more about this process. All students admitted to FSU for the summer or fall term are eligible to participate in the FYA program and can apply after acceptance through FSU International Programs website.
In addition to its Top 20 national ranking among public universities, FSU is one of only six institutions in the country to receive the APLU Platinum Award, which recognizes a demonstrated commitment to Global Learning, Research, and Engagement. FSU also ranks sixth among public universities for “long-term duration” of study abroad experiences like FYA.
